Day 1Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour

We will begin our Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour early in the morning to make the most of the day. Our transport will pick everyone up in Cusco, starting early in the morning. The drive will take us through charming Andean villages and stunning landscapes. You will enjoy the changing scenery as we ascend into the highlands.

After approximately three hours of travel, we will stop for a traditional breakfast in a local town. Here, you can try local dishes and fuel up for the hike ahead. Our tour guide will provide essential information about the day and answer your questions.

Scenic Journey to Palccoyo

We will continue our journey to the starting point  in the parking lot. It is near the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain trailhead, located at 4,700 meters (15,420 feet). On the way, you will see herds of alpacas, llamas, and small mountain communities.

The guide will explain the geological origin of the colorful formations, which are the result of marine sediment deposits oxidized over millions of years.

At the trailhead, we will have a short briefing and begin our hike. Unlike the more strenuous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, Palccoyo offers an easier, gradual trail with no steep inclines. The trail is approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) long and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Reaching Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain

We will arrive at the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, located at an altitude of 4,900 meters (16,076 feet). The vibrant reds, yellows, and greens of the mountains provide a breathtaking natural palette. You will have plenty of time to take photos, relax, and enjoy the views.

Our guide will show us the nearby stone forest, a fascinating natural formation of towering rock spires. From this vantage point, you will see sweeping views of the Andes, including Ausangate, the highest peak in southern Peru. The serene environment makes this location truly special.

Lunch and Return

After our hike, we will return to the trailhead and drive to a local restaurant for lunch. You will enjoy a traditional Peruvian meal prepared with fresh ingredients. This is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the tour and share your experience with the group.

After lunch, we will begin the return journey to Cusco. The drive back takes approximately three hours, arriving in the city by early evening.
